About Me
I am a postdoctoral fellow at Aarhus University School of Culture and Society, where I join a team of scholars who investigate "the social life of cryptocurrency." The international fellowship, awarded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, commences on March 2024. The project looks into the lived experiences of individuals from the global south, especially from the Philippines, Cuba, and Kenya. This project explores how cryptocurrencies have become part of the everyday informal economic practices in countries in marginalized countries, particularly the way crypto infiltrates the country’s financial and technological power. It asks what problems cryptocurrency solves for participants in these informal economies. It also explores the social practices around them, providing an understanding of the daily economic life, the social networks they weave, and the intermediaries present in this untraditional financial landscape.
I am also a full-time faculty member (on special detail) of the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication (UP CMC), teaching undergraduate and graduate communication research and theory courses. I hold a Ph.D. in Communication. I am currently a UP Scientist 1 (2021 to 2023).
I have been the Director of the UP CMC Office of Research and Publication Director from 2020 to April 2024. In addition, at the UP CMC Department of Communication Research, I co-lead the Filipino Communication Experience Laboratory. I was the former Special Assistant to the UP System's Vice President for Public Affairs.
I have contributed book chapters with Routledge and the Ateneo de Manila Press, edited an issue for the Plaridel Journal, and written chapters in an Anvil-awarded Communication Research primer. In addition, I have published journal articles and conference papers in the last seven years. I am on the editorial boards of communication, media, and society journals. I sit as the Editor-in-Chief (2021-present) of the PCS Review. I also served as Managing Editor of the Plaridel Journal of Communication, Media, and Society from 2020 to 2024.
